  Peripheral Arterial Disease Symptoms

Claudication (“intermittent claudication”)

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has various symptoms, but the most common of them is Claudication. Claudication in the lower extremities is a painful muscle cramping and/or fatigue in the hips, thighs or calves when walking, climbing stairs or exercising. Only 1 out of 5 people with PAD have intermittent Claudication.

Rest Pain

Considered more severe than Claudication is Rest Pain. If leg pain occurs while sitting or lying down or with your legs elevated and at rest, then you should seek doctor’s consultation immediately.

Wounds

Wounds occur in the lower extremities when there is insufficient blood loss in the area. Patients might find loss of skin due to the inability to heal sufficiently. These wounds are often caused by a cut or bump that opens the skin and slowly expands.

CLI / Gangrene

A more advanced stage of a wound and a sign of severe progression of PAD. Tissue loss has already occurred and the term was created for someone with a high chance for major amputation.

Change of temperature

Noticeable change in color – blueness, or in temperature (coolness) when compared to the other limb.
